Thanks for writing this. It brings back a memory of a bike trip I took in the 1990s. Our little group from NYC and the DC area found a route in West Virginia to try out. It was a hot July 4th weekend, and we were cycling on the narrow shoulder of very rural WV roads. Multiple times we had pickup trucks scare us by veering towards our group and hollering. I think the assumption was that the only people who could be enjoying this kind of physical activity must be city-slickers with their "cushy" desk jobs, not locals. It left an impression on what these small rural towns must be like.
