There are similar Germanic roots in both languages. And I was able to connect with other Ukrainian words. For example, kasha which is roasted buckwheat cereal and popular in Eastern Europe, was used in my mom's cooking--"kasha varnishkes". Anyway, in Ukranian kasha can also mean to make a mess of things. If you've ever eaten kasha, you'll get the reference. ;-)
